Offload Medicine Transition Unit, The Ottawa Hospital - Civic Campus

A newly constructed 40-bed temporary unit, will allow the hospital additional capacity, and ensure patients receive the care they need. It will also decrease wait times for patients in the Emergency Departments, as well as reduce ambulance offload times, and allow our paramedic partners to return to the community quickly.

Cumulus worked with The Ottawa Hospital and the Ministry of Health to develop a temporary 10,800 sq. ft. Sprung structure that will serve as a fully-operational facility to support the Civic Campus’ emergency department, taking on overflow of patients requiring care.

The Offload Medicine Transition Unit (OMTU) provides hospital grade accommodations - equipped with systems to allow for negative air pressure, a nurse call system, local paging and emergency power. Connecting directly to the main hospital via an above-ground tunnel the unit is insulated for four seasons, allowing the facility to weather a harsh Ottawa winter (or summer) while the pandemic runs its course. In addition to 40 beds the unit has staff stations and lounge, washroom facilities, showers, nutrition area, a negative pressure isolation room, and its own ambulance intake area for patient offloading.
