The Kingsway Entertainment District is envisioned as word-class destination for northeastern Ontario and a hub for the Greater Sudbury community. Slated as the home of the OHL Sudbury Wolves and a main venue for concerts and events, the campus will bring life to a relatively untouched area of Sudbury. A 6,500-seat arena/venue is supported by dining, shopping, hotel, recreational facilities and plaza for an experience that can be enjoyed year-round.

The site master plan responds to the dual challenges of steep topography and optimizing circulation. The tired arena works with the natural slope of the site by building into the slope and taking advantage of the natural bowl shape of the rock. The forms of the buildings are purposefully sleek by contrast – crafted to a comfortable pedestrian scale and opening onto the plaza, allowing signage and lighting to animate the space.

Cumulus lead the planning evolution of this multi-stakeholder development that has quickly become a new model for municipal public private partnerships. Cumulus is working with Centreline Architects in Sudbury on the consolidated Site Plan Control application to realize synergies, take advantage of cost savings and mitigate against schedule risk presented by this complex development. The project process thus far has cultivated a unique partnership among three primary stakeholders and further driven by the developers’ enthusiasm for the growth of Sudbury.
