Unity Health St. Joseph’s Health Centre Peter Gilgan Patient Care Tower
Inpatient and surgical care tower advancing clinical excellence and patient-centered design.

Cumulus Architects recently led the architectural planning component of the Master Plan update and Ministry of Health Stage 2 submission for the redevelopment of Unity Health’s St. Joseph Health Centre (SJHC)Toronto campus.
Collaborating closely with hospital staff from across 18 departments, Cumulus helped integrate innovation and best practice into the programming and planning of the new tower. Comprehensive consultation with user groups and stakeholders for key clinical programs including Emergency, Surgical Services, Intensive Care, Inpatient Mental Health and Medical Surgical Units helped shape design options that reflect best practices and goals for innovative healthcare delivery.

The program planning, blocking, stacking, and detailed site development was the result of close collaboration amongst Unity Health consultants Agnew Peckham (Functional Programming), BA Group (Traffic) and HH Angus (Mechanical, Electrical) as well as Cumulus team members Medical Architecture (UK) and WSP (Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil).
The new SJHC Peter Gilgan Patient Care Tower exemplifies the value of our team-based approach. This project builds on Cumulus’ deep experience with hospital design in Ontario and our longstanding partnership in strategic planning for Unity Health’s three campus’.
The new Peter Gilgan Patient Care Tower brings together state-of-the-art clinical programs while navigating legacy buildings, and complex logistical systems—overcoming the challenges of a dense urban site to deliver an innovative, modern, and accessible facility at the heart of Toronto’s west end.

In June 2025 it was announced that a record-breaking $60 million donation by Peter Giligan will fund the new patient tower. Learn more about the donation.
“Mr. Gilgan’s generous investment is already sparking change. At the heart of this transformation is the state-of-the-art patient tower that will reshape healthcare delivery in Toronto’s west end. Designed to address the community’s growing and changing needs, the tower will boost emergency and surgical capacity, expand mental health services, and open doors to innovation, including advancements in artificial intelligence.”
