Princess Margaret Cancer Centre: Early Works Redevelopment Project
UHN’s Princess Margaret Cancer Centre is the largest integrated cancer research, teaching and treatment centre in Canada. Cumulus is working with UHN to redevelop a number of patient, staff and family focused facilities that expands capacity for quality cancer care and research. Our team recently completed an Early Works Package across a number of Departments to create necessary vacancies for a larger planned project.
Cumulus Architects recently delivered a multi-phased design build project with the PCL Special Projects Team as a Design Build. The project consisted of a number of interconnected phased objectives delivered across a number of departments including:
New Head and Neck Centre (3rd floor)
New Library and Education Centre (6th floor)
Renovations to the Gastrointestinal Clinic (GI) (4th floor)
Renovations to the Genitourinary Clinic (GU) (4th floor)
New Catering Kitchen (10th floor)
Various infrastructure upgrades
One of the key focuses of the Early Works Redevelopment Project is the Head and Neck Centre (HNC), an ambulatory clinic which was previously located in a 1980s vintage wing and is substantially deficient in required space relative to patient demand and technology needs. The new clinic has been expanded into an 11,800 SF area on the west side of the 3rd floor. Project elements include new procedure rooms, exam rooms, scope storage, family and staff areas. The Head and Neck Centre space was constructed as the first phase in this project so that the GU Clinic can be temporarily moved into this new ambulatory space while the GU area upgrades were undertaken.
On the 4th floor, renovations included infrastructure upgrades and new finishes for the GI and GU Clinics. The GI department renovations were undertaken in-place over five phases while that clinic continued to function. The scope for the GI Clinic involved converting five consult rooms into exam rooms. The GU renovation includes a similar refresh of finishes, a new barrier-free reception area and enlarged staff areas. On the 6th floor, Cumulus designed a new Library and Education Centre which is intended for staff use and features comfortable seating, computer stations and lockers. The adjoining education center includes four simulation exam rooms and four meeting rooms of various sizes with video link where staff can observe and evaluate simulation events. On the 10th floor, obsolete lab space was converted into a small catering kitchen. The project also included major mechanical system upgrades and new air handling units on the roof.
