Health PEI: Net Zero Ready Mental Health Campus
Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

An international consulting team lead by Cumulus Architects has evolved the provincial model of Mental Health and Addictions care to create a blueprint for community-focused and specialised healthcare delivery across Prince Edward Island.

Designing a Holistic Community
Central to the future of acute care and treatment is the revitalization and destigmatization of Charlottetown’s legacy Hillsborough Hospital. Anticipating opportunities for institutional and community partnerships, the expansive waterfront site has been reimagined as a dynamic mixed-use hub where diverse allied building growth is welcomed alongside the state-of-the-art campus of care. Through active transport links, improved open space and recreation opportunities, the campus will become a destination embraced by Charlottetown residents  and support the growth of a complete community.

Continuum of Mental Health and Addiction Services
Through evidence-based design strategies for treatment and recovery, the new acute care hospital site will support the continuum of care through incorporation of transition housing, structured outpatient services and day programming to facilitate  transition to the community. These facilities focus on independent choice through access to nature and carefully modulated environments. From the subtle gradations of private to public space patients are provided the opportunity to re-engage with the world at a pace they are comfortable with.

Holistic approach to a Net Zero ready campus
Long term provincial goals for a carbon neutral site and hospital development were translated as active transport connections, community gardens, green roofs and roof mounted PV systems and extension of the renewable district energy system for both active and passive initiatives. Situated along the Hillsborough River, the sustainably- driven design responds to projected rising sea levels and coastal erosion through various shoreline preservation strategies and overall siting for future building development.
